In the opening scene of the movie we are shown Tom Hanks preparing to go on his journey into the ocean to try and find his way home. Tom is embarking on the departure into his journey with his Wilson ball, which is like his familiar. During the time he is floating at sea battling the waves in order to stay alive, after many days he comes to a point where he feels he will no longer make it. ironically one morning he is waken by a whale that suffices for air. His belly of the whale moment comes when he is all alone at sea on nothing but a little raft he put together with wood. While Tom is at sea he loses his familiar(the Wilson ball) which he almost drowns in an attempt to retrieve it as it floats away. The ocean may represent the biggest journey Tom may face of his life because like his journey is vast so is the ocean.
